Mahana Pinot Gris 2015
The Mahana Pinot Gris has a bright and clear appearance along with a yellow straw colour that indicates some barrel involvement. The nose of the wine is lifted with dominant pear and apricot fruit characters. There is also an underlying spiciness with hints of lychee in there. There are some very subtle smoky notes and an almost gravelly, mineral character. Quite complex and serious. The palate is full and rich relying on fruit intensity and winemaking to drive the wine rather than alcohol. It is very textural. The wine has a long finish that is quite dry and very moreish. It is an excellent food servant. Present but in no way dominating!
This wine has been made from premium select Pinot Gris blocks at our Mahana Vineyard, as well as the neighbouring ‘Tibbs Block’, all of which are dry grown. There were no additions at all prior to fermentation and through the maturation process. This wine was made using high solids and warm fermentation temperatures in old barriques to pursue interest, texture and complexity.
Pan fried snapper, smoked fish or roast chicken dishes.
