Mahana Clays & Gravels Pinot Noir 2013
The Mahana Clays and Gravels Pinot Noir has a clear appearance with a dark red colour. The wine has a youthful red/purple hue. The nose is quite lifted with dark berries jostling with violets and lavender for attention. There are also earthy, almost carnal scents… it is very decadent. Almond, marzipan and chocolate are all there. The palate is quite rich with plenty of structure. Ripe and dark fruits carry through to the palate. Assertive acidity accentuates the tannins. This is a serious pinot noir that requires food and/or time.
Hand harvested clusters from superior parcels of the Mahana vineyard. Meticulous triage followed by ambient cold soak of 6 days. 30% whole clusters incorporated to elevate the complexity of palate, tannin & fragrance. Natural fermentation with 28 day cuvaison. Elevage in 25% new french oak for 18 months. Natural malolactic fermentation in early summer. Gravity during all transfers to and from barrel. Bottled by gravity. Unfined and unfiltered
Perfect gastronomic marriages include duck confit, washed rind cheese, mild game, Chinese barbeque or roast lamb.
